This line started with a fascination. Growing up in Southern California and spending a lot of time on Kauai, Meeshka has always been fascinated by the sea.
Meeshka played “Marco Polo” and “mermaid” in the swimming pools of her youth. One jewelry story line features Melusine, a beautiful siren with the tendency to transform into a two-tailed serpent while bathing. According to medieval legend, the alchemical siren was discovered in the forest by Raymond, the Duke of Aquitaine. Taken by her beauty, he begs the maiden to marry him. She agrees on one condition: he must never disturb her on Saturday, when she bathes. Over time the Duke grows suspicious and spies on her. He is shocked to discover her true identity and Melusine, feeling betrayed, transforms herself into a dragon and departs in a shrieking rage. Melusine’s beauty and sensuality have been captured in the cast sterling silver medallion at the center of the necklace, symbolizing the unity of earth and water, body and soul.
The Hawaiian Honu, or sea turtle, represents longevity, safety, and mana, or spiritual energy. Native Hawaiians consider turtles the bearers of good luck and peace and they are worshiped as aumakua, or spirit guides whose wisdom protects and leads her followers throughout their lives. The honu is a recurring theme in the Under the Sea jewelry line.
Underwater themes are often seen throughout Meeshka’s jewelry designs.
